Lecture 03 Flashcards
What are the three modes of heat transfer?
Conduction, convection, thermal radiation
Is heat flow a vector or scalar? Why?
Vector because heat flows in all directions
What is the rate equation for conduction?
qsubCOND=kA(deltaT)/L
What is the conduction heat flux equation?
q’‘subCOND=k(deltaT)/L or qsubCOND/A
What are the units for heat flux?
W/m^2
What are the units for the proportional constant in conduction?
W/K*m
What is the one important difference between conduction and convection?
Convection does have a bulk motion while conduction does not.
What can the medium be for convection?
It must be a fluid
What’s an example of convection?
Fan blowing or wind
What’s an example of conduction?
Metal spoon entering a hot cup of coffee.
What is the formula for convective heat flow rate?
qsubCONV=hA(TsubS-TsubINF)
What is the formula for convective heat flux?
q’‘subCONV=h(TsubS-TsubINF) or q’‘subCONV=qsubCONV/A
What is thermal radiation?
Energy emitted by matter that is a nonzero temperature
What is emissive power?
q’‘subTR=E, aka Thermal Radiation emission rate
What’s the formula for emissive power?
E=(epsilon)(sigma)(TsubS)^4; Epsilon is imessivity, no units; Sigma is Boltzmann constant, 5.6710^-8 W/(m^2K^4)
