Multiple sclerosis
Most common disease of brain & spinal cord
Multiple
Many areas of brain and spinal cord are affected
Sclerosis
Hardened areas within the brain and spinal cord, scar tissue
exacerbation
An increase in the seriousness of a disease or disorder as marked by greater intensity in the signs or symptoms also called relapse or flare up
Remission
Partial or complete disappearance of the clinical and subjective characteristics of a chronic disease
What is dopamine
It is a neurotransmitter necessary for the control of
Movement and coordination when dopamine decreases the ability to control their muscles decline leading to impaired movements and balance
Parkinsonism
A condition which resembles Parkinson’s disease. It is often a result of side effects of medication
Paraplegia
Condition characterized by the loss of sensation and movement in the lower extremities and abdomen. Blade and bowel control is also impaired any injury below c7 waist down
Quadriplegic
Condition characteristized by loss of sensation of movement in all of the extremities of the body and most of the trunk muscles arms &legs
Hemiplegia
Loss of sensation and motion of one side of the body stroke is a big cause half of body is affected
Contracture
Is a permanent contraction of a muscle which results in joint flexion
Foot drop
An abnormal condition of lower leg and foot in which the toes and the foot don’t stay at eighth angles with leg ( foot straight out )
Decubitus ulcers
Occurs when there is prolonged pressure on the skin over a bony area of body ( pressure sores)
Elimination
Changes following a spinal cord injury; there for a person may experience urinary retention or incontince
Spastic
Uncontrolled contractions of skeletal muscles the muscles can’t relax
