Latent Heat Flashcards
What happens when a solid is heated to its melting point
its particle gain energy and are able to partly overcome the force of attraction between them
they no longer stay in a fixed position and go into liquid form
what happens when a liquid is heated to its boiling point
its particles gain enough energy to completely overpower the intermolecular forces of attraction
they begin to move freely as a gas
what happens when heat is transferred to an object
it usually increases in KE/temperature but sometimes the PE increases and the phase changes - change of state
what is latent heat
heat absorbed or released during a phase change
- hidden or concealed -> latent
what happens to temperature during change of state
stays the same
what is latent heat of fusion
solid to liquid
liquid to solid
what is latent heat of vaporisation
liquid to gas
gas to liquid
