Life cycle

A

1st/2nd Larvae in soil/faeces
3rd stage larvae ingested by horse
4th stage larvae migrate from large intestine to anterior mesenteric artery causing inflammation
6 months later - adults attached to mucous membrane of ceacum and large colon

Pathogenesis

A
  • Most significant nematode
  • Larvae cause endarteritis (damage to arterial walls) = colic
  • Damage to LI muscosa due to feeding habits of worms
  • Disruption caused by emergence of adults into intestine
  • lesions due to migrating larvae
