Landforms at Plate Margins Flashcards
Give an Example of Fold Mountains.
The Himalayas or The Alps
Give an Example of an Ocean Trench.
The Marianas or Peruvian Trenches
Give an Example of a Composite Volcano.
Mount Fuji in Japan and Montserrat.
Give an Example of a Shield Volcano.
Mauna Loa on the Hawaiian Island and Iceland.
How are Fold Mountains Formed?
Through the collision of two tectonic plates. The sedimentary rocks that have built up between them are folded and forced upwards to form mountains.
The Himalayas – two continental plates
The Andes – continental and oceanic plates
How are Ocean Trenches Formed?
Through subduction. Causing sea-floor and outer most crust to bend and form a steep v-shaped depression.
How are Composite Volcanoes Formed?
Made from andesitic lava (lower temperatures, lots of dissolved gas). Magma is sticky and cools quickly, forming steep sided volcano.
How are Shield Volcanoes Formed?
Made from Basaltic lava (higher temperatures, very low gas content). Lava is runny and flows long distances before it cools, therefore forming a dome shape volcano with sloping sides.
