LAB - Endocrine System Flashcards
define paracrine factors
localized hormone that will not travel through the blood
location of pituitary gland
hangs off hypothalamus from infundibulum tissue
how many hormones does pituitary gland produce
9
what does anterior pituitary do?
controlled by regulatory hormones from hypothalmus
where is ACTH secreted
anterior pituitary
what does LH (Luteinizing hormone) do
stimulates ovaries ovulation, helps stimulate production of estrogen and progestin
what hormones does posterior pituitary produce?
ADH + oxytocin
what does ADH do
stimulates kidneys to decrease water loss and increase blood pressure of body
what does oxytocin do in females?
uterine contraction and breast milk production
what does oxytocin do in males
stimulates ejection of sperm and prostate to ejaculate semen
where is pineal gland
in 3rd ventricle
what does pineal gland produce
melatonin
what hormones does thyroid gland produce
T3, T4, calcitonin
what hormone does parathyroid gland produce
PTH
what does PTH do
increase blood calcium levels
which layer of adrenal gland produces aldosterone?
zona glomerosa
what does aldosterone do?
saves Na, gets rid of K
which layer of adrenal gland produces cortisol, corticosterone, and hydrocortisone?
zona fasciulata
what do the hormones produced in zona fasciulata do
work on glucose metabolism and storage
what does zona reticularis do
produce androgens (male sex hormones), promote sex drive and growth
what hormones does medulla produce
epinephrine and norepinepherine
what hormones do kidneys produce
calcitrol, renin, erythropoietin
what does calcitrol do
responds to PTH, targets bones, stimulates Ca absorption and release calcium from bones
what does endocrine pancreas produce (islets)
insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide
