Lab 7 ( Histology Tissue) Flashcards
what is histology?
the study of tissues
what is tissue?
a group of cells working together to perform a function
What are some different types of tissue?
- Muscle
- Epithelial
- connective
*nervous
what are organs?
groups of tissues working together to perform a particular function
what does epithelial tissue form?
forms a continuous sheath around the outer portion of the body, and along most of the internal body cavities
What are some examples of where epithelial tissue is used?
- skin
- airways
- digestive tracts
*urinary - reproductive systems
what does epithelial tissue provide?
provides the body’s first line of protection ( physical, chemical, and biological)
what do the cells of the epithelial tissue act as?
gatekeepers of the body controlling permeability and allowing selective transfer of material across a physical barrier
how many cells layers are formed in simple epithelial tissue?
1 tissue layer
how many cell layers are formed in stratified epithelial tissue?
2 or more tissue layers
how many cell layer are formed by pseudostratified epithelial tissue?
1 layer that appears like more
how many cell layers are formed by transitional epithelial tissue?
a form of specialized stratified epithelium win which the shape of the cell can vary (transition in shape)
what shape does squamous tissue have?
flattened and thin
what shape does cuboidal tissue have?
boxy, as wide as it is tall
what shape does columnar tissue have?
rectangular, taller than it is wide
