Pregnancy
In terms of hormonal profiles, what does fairly flat levels of all hormones mean?
Absence of regular cycle, due to:
Insufficient fat stores (female athlete triad, anorexia)
Delayed puberty
GnRH related problem
What is female athlete triad?
A reproductive disorder that occurs due to insufficient fat stores in the body for successful and sustained reproductive capacity: Displays as absence of menstrual cycle (amenorrhea), reduced bone density (osteoporosis due to drop in estrogen) and eating disorders
What are 5 forms of contraception?
Male condom Vasectomy or tubal ligation Diaphragm Contraceptive pill IUD
What type of protection is a male condom and what does it do?
It is a physical barrier
Covers the head and shaft of penis. Prevents sperm from entering vagina, often has spermicide too.
Protects against STIs
What type of protection is sterilization and what does it do?
It is surgical
Involves the vas deferens or fallopian tubes, tying them or blocking them with scar tissue.
What type of protection is a diaphragm and what does it do?
It is a barrier protection method, that sits on top of the cervix
What type of protection is the contraceptive pill and what does it do?
It is hormonal, and elevates estrogen/progesterone levels to fool the body into thinking it is already pregnant. This also causes negative feedback in the anterior pituitary
What type of protection is an IUD and what does it do?
Hormonal and chemical. It sits in the uterus and releases copper (kills sperm) and hormones to make the body think it is pregnant.
