Lab 3 Flashcards
What is enzyme specificity?
The characteristic of enzymes that they only accept certain substrates and catalyze specific chemical reactions
What is enzyme temperature dependence?
The characteristic of enzymes that they change activity with temperature.
Why do high temperatures affect enzyme activity?
The enzyme can denature (change shape.)
Why do low temperatures affect enzyme activity?
Less kinetic energy means fewer substrates are making contact with the enzyme.
What is enzyme pH dependence?
The characteristic of enzymes to catalyze reactions at a specific pH range
What is a spectrophotometer?
An instrument that analyses the amount of light that passes through a sample at various wavelengths
Does low pH favor H+ attachment or release? Why?
Attachment. Low pH means high H+ concentration, so to balance out the concentration, more H+ attach to the enzymes than release.
