Lab 2: tissues Flashcards
connective tissue consists of
4 types of tissue
cells and extracellular material
connective, epithelial, muscle, and nervous
fibroblasts:
cells of connective tissue responsible for synthesis and maintenance of extracellular material.
ground substances
amorphous material that binds grounds substances, forming a medium for the passage of materials throughout the connective tissues and for exchange of metabolites with circulatory system
3 main fibre types
collagen, the most abundant protein in the animal body
elastin, rubber-like material arranged as discontinuous sheets
structural glycoproteins, which are associated with the cell surface membranes
Blood
a major type of connective tissue, made up of plasma, rbc (erythrocytes), wbc (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes)
hematopoiesis
blood cell and platelet generation in bone marrow
epithelial tissue
lines all body surfaces, cavities, and tubes, functions as interfaces between compartments
classification of epithelium
- number of cell layers: simple or steraified
- shape of cells: squamous, columnar, etc
- presence of surface specializations like cilia or keratin
types of muscle tissue
skeletal, smooth, and cardiac
skeletal muscle/voluntary muscle
used for movement of skeleton, made of contractile proteins and striated muscle
smooth muscle/visceral muscle
muscular component of blood vessels, digestive tract, uterus, and urinary bladder, among other viscera
control automatically and through hormone, thus involuntary
cardiac muscle
striated and mono-nucleated
intercalated disks
responsible for force transmission of contractions between cells and support the spread of APs
Nervous tissue
neurons made of sensory receptors, conducting pathways, and sites of integration and analysis
3 types of cartilage
elastic, hyaline, and fibrocartilage
