lab Flashcards
Tidal volume
It is the amount of air that can be inhaled or exhaled during one respiratory cycle.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
It is the amount of air that can be forcibly inhaled after a normal tidal volume. IRV is usually kept in reserve, but is used during deep breathing
Expiratory Reserve Volume
It is the volume of air that can be exhaled forcibly after exhalation of normal tidal volume
Vital Capacity
It is the total amount of air exhaled after maximal inhalation. VC indicates ability to breathe deeply and cough, reflecting inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength.

Lung Compliance
Refers to how the lungs expand for each unit rise in transpulmonary pressure. In a typical adult person, the total compliance of both lungs is approximately 200 milliliters of air per centimeter of water transpulmonary pressure. In other words, every time the transpulmonary pressure rises by 1 centimeter of water, the lung capacity expands by 200 milliliters in 10 to 20 seconds.
___________ muscles contract during inhalation, causing the lung volume to expand and the thoracic cavity to enlarge.
The diaphragm and intercostal
