Lab 1 Flashcards
Describe the basic properties of the Protozoa
Unicellular, can be solitary or colonial. Can have specialized organelles. Can reproduce asexually or sexually, found in moist environments.
Briefly describe ciliated protozoa
Use cilia for locomotion and potentially feeding. Have two nuclei (macronuclei and micronuclei), can have several of each. Asexual reproduction can occur by transverse fission or budding and sexual by conjugation. Usually free living
What is occurring in this slide? What organism is this? What is the plane of division? What is happening to the macro and micronuclei?
Transverse binary fission of Paramecium sp. Plane of division is Transverse. Macronucleus divides by amtosis (closed mitosis - no nuclear envelope breakdown) and micronucleus by mitosis.
To what protozoan group does *Paramecium *belong?
Ciliated protozoa
What organism is this and what is happening? Why is this considered to be sexual reproduction? Which nucleus is involved in this?
Conjugation of Paramecium sp.
Considered sexual because it is combining the genes of two organisms.
Micronucleus
What is this organism? In what ways do they often move and what structure is responsible? What is the shape of the macronucleus in this organism?
Where are the cilia located? What does this say about its feeding method?
Vorticella sp.
Often move in a whip-like twirly movements, using a contractile fibre in the stalk called a “myoneme”. MAcronucleus is long, whip like.
Cilia located around cup, likely feed by producing currents
