Lab 1 Flashcards
What is the order for food to pass through the GI tract?
Oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, caecum, colon, rectum, anus
Out the Stomach Into Caecum Could Result at Anus
What three organs does the duodenum receive material from?
Chyme from stomach, bile from liver and alkaline digestive juices from pancreas
How many peritoneal, pleural and pericardial cavities are there?
1, 2, 1 respectively
What are four shared characteristics of the peritoneal, pleural and pericardial cavities?
Allow internal organs to move without friction
They are ventral in position
They have visceral and parietal surfaces
They contain a small volume of fluid
When cutting into the abdominal cavity the first serous membrane you cut was?
Parietal peritoneum. It lines the body wall of the abdominal cavity whereas the visceral peritoneum is the membrane directly lining/ touching organ
What is the structure that prevents choking?
epiglottis
In a rat during swallowing food passes ___ to the trachea and into the oesophagus?
dorsal
What structure had the least vascular appearance in the dissection?
The stomach as it doesn’t play a huge role in absorption or secretion
What functions does the liver have?
Exocrine and endocrine. The exocrine function is that it secretes B ile into the duodenum via the common duct. The bile aids in digestion and absorption of fats and vitamins. Endocrine function is regulation of M etabolism as hormones (proteins) enter bloodstream.
BM- Both Mechanisms
What structure had the most vascular appearance?
Spleen because it is involved in regulating blood cells including break down of RBC. It is therefore not a part of the digestive system and instead the lymphatic system.
What structures are absent in rats?
canine teeth
gall bladder
bulbous uterus (they have a horn shaped one)
What are the parts of the small intestine called?
duodenum, jejunum, ileum
dj ileum
What is the role of the hepatic portal vein?
transports blood from gut to liver
What is the role of the pancreas?
secretes alkaline digestive juices regulates stomach pH as stomach is slightly acidic. It manufactures proteins (hormones) and releases them into both the bloodstream and the gut
Pancreas- Ph
What is caecum?
It’s an exogenous bacteria responsible for digestion of cellulose
