L8 Flashcards
Dosage of low potency drugs and implications
Low potency = higher dose needed to produce effect
- higher chance to activate some other sites and give side effects
Receptor definition
A protein whose function is to recognise and respond ti endogenous chemicals, or ‘sense’ the environment
Have a ligand-bindding site which only recognises specific ligands
Drug targets apart from receptors
other molecules which also interact with drugs
Classification of receptors
by their structure, pharmacology and signalling
Direct/ Indirect signalling
Direct signalling doesn’t involve any protein other than the receptor
Indirect signalling needs proteins which will transduce the signal
Inverse agonist
Binds to the receptor and stabilises it, preventing it from stopping propagating the signal
Antagonist
Binds to a receptors and prevents it from signalling by blocking the ligand-binding site
Drug targets
Ion channels, Enzymes, Transporters, microtubules
