L7 pop genetics Flashcards

1
Q

how to find allelic frequencies?
how much is the sum of the frequencies?

A

add up total # of alleles then divide what you’re looking for. *50 total alleles, (25 diploid) then to find freq of B you divide 3 of B by 50.

should add up to 1

Q

what is the Hardy-Weinberg principle?
what are the conditions for HW equilibrium?

A

it describes a mathematical relationship between allele frequencies and genotype frequencies and allows the prediction of a population’s genotype frequencies from its allele frequencies

random mating, natural selection

Q

when is genetic equilibrium reached?

A

when the introduction of the allele into the population by the mutation rate u is balanced by the elimination of the allele by selection with intensity s against the recessive homozygotes, at the rate sq^2

when u=sq^2

Q

genetic drift?
is it slower or faster in larger pop?
does rate of genetic drift increase or decrease during pop bottlenecks?

A

the random chance change in allele frequencies due to individuals BY CHANCE leaving more/less

slower in larger pop

increased during bottleneck
