L7 | MATTER | Kinetic molecular theory Flashcards
What is the Kinetic molecular theory explain?
All matter is composed of small particles which have space between them and are in random motion. How matter exists in different states.
What is kinetic theory of matter?
All matter is composed of particles which have a certain amount of energy which allows them to move at different speeds depending on the temperature (energy).
Broadly, what does kinetic theory of matter mean?
All matter is composed of particles which have a certain amount of energy which allows them to move at different speeds depending on the temperature (energy). There are spaces between the particles and also attractive forces between particles when they come close together.
What is the Kinetic molecular theory?
Used to explain the behavior of the particles in all three states.
What are the 7 points of the Kinetic molecular theory?
- Tiny particles.
- In constant motion.
- Empty spaces between.
- Attraction and repulsion exist between the particles.
- Collisions are elastic.
- The kinetic energy of all the particles will remain constant if the temperature remains constant.
- A state change may occur when the energy of the particles changes.
What are the macroscopic properties of Solids?
- Low KE levels
- Retains its shape
- Highly incompressible
What are the microscopic properties of Solids?
- Slow-moving molecules
- Strong molecular bonds
- Small intermolecular spacing
What are the macroscopic properties of Liquids?
- Higher KE levels
.* Takes shape of container
- Slightly compressible
What are the microscopic properties of Liquids?
- Fast moving molecules
- Weak intermolecular bonds
- Large intermolecular spacing
What are the macroscopic properties of Gas?
- High KE levels
- Takes the shape of the container
- Highly compressible
What is the microscopic properties of Gas?
- Fast-moving particles
- No intermolecular bonds
- Very large intermolecular spacing
