L6 | MATTER | States of matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
- Solids
- Liquids
- Gas
What is it called when a solid turns into a liquid?
Melting.
Liquid to solid?
Freezing.
Solid to gas?
Sublimation.
Gas to solid?
Deposition.
Liquid to gas?
Evaporation.
Gass to a liquid?
Condensation.
Brownian motion?
Random movement of microscopic particles in suspension in a liquid or gas.
The diffusion of many particles.
What is Brownian motion caused by?
Collisions between dirt particles and the molecules of the liquid or gas.
What is DIFFUSION?
The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is diffusion caused by?
The constant thermal motion of particles.
During a change of state, what happens to the physical properties?
They change.
What happens to the chemical composition during a change of state?
Remains the same.
What is the Law of conservation of mass?
The total mass of the particles before the state change and after the state change remains constant.
Melting point?
The temperature at which a solid changes its phase or state to become a liquid. The process is called melting.
