L3 - Descriptive stats 1 Flashcards
How can you identify a normal distribution?
symmetrical bell-shaped curve
How can you identify a skewed distribution?
asymmetrical curve with a longer tail on one side
How can you identify a uniform distribution?
all values have equal probability
How can you identify a bimodal distribution?
2 distinct peaks
How can you identify a multimodal distribution?
more than 2 peaks
What do measures of central tendency do?
help us understand the centre or average of a distribution
what are the 4 most common measures of tendency
mean
median
mode
range
how to calculate the mean?
the average of all the values
add values and divide by how many there are
how to calculate the median?
the middle value when data is arranged in ascending or descending order
how to calculate the mode?
the most frequently occurring value
what’s a frequency distribution?
a way to organise and display data by showing the number of times each score or value occurs in a dataset
what’s a histogram?
type of plot used to represent a frequency distribution
commonly used for all types of data - not nominal
what’s a skewed distribution?
distributions with one central peak that aren’t symmetrical
what’s a positive skew?
a long “tail” to the right
what’s a negative skew?
a long “tai” to the left
