Knee Common Presentations Flashcards
Patellar Fractures
- 20 - 50Y
- MALES
- MOI: TRAUMA
- Painful/limited end-ROM
Patellar Tendon Rupture
Patellar <40Y
- MOI: eccentric overload extensor mechanism/trauma, JUMP LANDING
- Hx degenerative tendinopathy common, TKA, ACLR
- Limited/absent knee EXT
- Painful, limited ROM/
- Quad retraction (muscle bulge, patella alta)
Quad Tendon Rupture
Quad: >40Y + MALE
- MOI: eccentric overload extensor mechanism/trauma, REGAINING BALANCE/RAPID QUAD CONTRACTION
- Hx degenerative tendinopathy common, TKA, ACLR
- Limited/absent knee EXT
- Painful, limited ROM/
- Quad retraction (muscle bulge, patella alta)
Osgood-Schlatter Disease
- MALES
- BILATERALLY
- Prominent tibial tuberosity
- End-range FLEX/EXT pain
Articular Cartilage Defects
- 10-20Y
- Active, MALE
- Bilaterally
- Lateral aspect of medial condyle
- MOI: Trauma or insidious onset
- Hemarthrosis w/in 2 hours of dislodgment
- Global, deep knee pain - aggravated w/activity, relieved with rest
- Stiffness/swelling w/activities
- Boggy end-feel
- Muscle Guarding
- Mechanical symptoms
Meniscus Lesion
- MOI: Contact trauma vs non-contact trauma or degenerative OA
- Audible “pop” w/directional change
- Delayed effusion (6-24h)
- Mechanical symptoms
- Painful/limited ROM/MMT
- Boggy end-feel
ACL Lesion
- NON-CONTACT INJURY > Contact Injury
- FEMALES (↑ Q-angle/narrow intercondylar notch, hormones/laxity)
- Artificial/Dry Turf
- Obesity
- Soccer/Volleyball
- Audible “pop”
- IMMEDIATE swelling
- Mechanical symptoms
- Painful/limited ROM
PCL Sprain
- Audible “pop”
- MOI: posterior F at proximal anterior-tibia, violent hyperextension of knee, fall on flexed knee w/PF
- Limited/painful ROM/MMT
- Guarding
MCL Sprain
- Soccer, football, hockey
- MOI: valgus force,
- Painful/limited ROM/MMT
LCL Sprain
- Varus trauma at knee
- Directional change
- Boggy end feel
Patellofemoral Instability
- Hx of the same
- Reflexive inhibition (giving way)
- Peri-patellar pain
- Hypermobility of joint
- Bruising/swelling
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
- Younger athletes
- FEMALE
- Insidious
- Crepitus
- Mechanical symptoms
- Patella alta/baja
- Painful/limited ROM/MMT
- Painful/hyper vs hypomobility of PF joint
Osteoarthropathy of Knee
- Hx knee injury/trauma/surgery, hypermobility, obesity, extreme PA levels,
- Older Adult (>50Y)
- FEMALES
- Insidious onset
- Mechanical/Crepitus
- empty/early hard end-feel
Arthrofibrosis
- Hx: Trauma/knee Sx (TKA)
- Progressive increase in pain/ROM limitations
- Stiffness (AM worse), crepitus
- Hypomobile joint
- Firm -end feel
Genu Recurvatum
- FEMALES
- Hx knee injury/joint laxity, forced knee extension injury, jump landing EXT,
- “knee instability”
- Impaired proprioception at knee
