knee (bones and parts) Flashcards
Three functional parts of the knee
- Femoropatellar articulation
- Medial femorotibial articulation
- Lateral femorotibial articulation
Describe the function of the knee
Acts as a pivotal, condylar joint or hinge joint. Allows flexion and extension of the leg
Which bone is medial? Tibia or fibula
Tibia is medial
What are bursae, and what are their function
Fluid filled sacs lined by synovial membrane
Provides cushioning between bones and tendons/ muscles reducing friction between the bones
Label the different bursae, clockwise starting from the top left
Popliteal Bursa, Suprapatellar Bursa, Prepatellar Bursa, Deep Infrapatellar Bursa, Subcutaneous Infrapatellar Bursa
Name the three types of cartilage
- Hyaline
- Fibrocartilage
- Elastic cartilage
What type of cartilage is shown below? Describe where it is used in the body
Hyaline cartilage. Covers ends of bones
What type of cartilage is shown below? Describe where it is used in the body
Elastic cartilage. Makes up soft body parts (eg. ears). Not a load-bearing cartilage
What type of cartilage is shown below? Describe where it is used in the body
Fibrocartilage. Used in cushioned joints
Which of the three cartilage types have high tensile strength and can resist pressure?
Fibrocartilage
