Key Terms Chapter 11 - Refraction Flashcards
Refraction
The bending of light as it travels at an angle. Goes from a material with one refractive index to another
Refracted Ray
The Ray that is bent upon entering a second medium
Angle of refraction
The angle between the refracted Ray and the normal
Index of refraction
The ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a given medium
Dispersion
The process of separating colours by refraction
Partial reflection and refraction
Some of the light that is travelling from one medium into another is reflected and some is refracted at boundary between media
Critical angle
The angle of incidence that produces an angle of refraction of 90
Total internal reflection
Incident light is not refracted but is reflected back from the boundary, occurs when light travels from a medium that is denser to less dense
Rainbow
Arc of colours of visible spectrum, appears opposite sun, caused by reflection, refraction, and dispersion of the Suns rays as they pass though water drops
Apparent depth
Optical effect where image of object appears closer than the object
Shimmering
Apparent movement of objects in hot air over objects and surfaces
Mirage
Optical effect caused by bending of light rays passing through layers of air that have extremely different temperatures
