key terms. Flashcards
real number.
all positive and negative numbers including decimals and fractions.
rational number.
number can be written in the form a/b where a and b are integers.
irrational number.
numbers can’t be written in the form a/b where a and b are integers.
surd.
a root that can’t be written as an integer.
rationalise.
getting rid of any surds from the bottom of fractions.
direct proportion.
2 quantities are in direct proportion if they increase and decrease at the same rate.
non-linear.
line isn’t straight. line with some curvature, no longer straight but still passes through origin.
inverse proportion.
2 quantities are inversely proportional if one decreases at the same rate as the other one increases.
roots/ solution.
values of the variable that satisfies the equation.
cubic.
curve with an algebraic equation of degree 3, highest total power that appears in this expression is power 3.
exponential graph.
graph with the equation of the form
y=a × bˣ
trigometric functions.
functions of angles. main trigometric functions are cosine, sine and tangent. other functions are reciprocals of these units; sin, cos, tan.
circle.
set of all points that are the same distance r from a fixed point.
tangent (to a circle.)
a straight line that touches the circle at just one point. the equation of the tangent is perpendicular to the equation of the radius at a given point.
function.
relation between a set of permissible outputs with the property that each input is related to exactly 1 output. f(input) = output. f(x)= x².
f(3) = 3² =9.
