Key Problems / Issues related to Encryption
Encryption is secure as of now with current computing power not being able to break most of the encryptions that we use. However, with new discoveries in technology and so, it won’t be long before encryption methods that are being used nowaday would have to be updated/upgraded. In the past, SHA-1 used to be the most secure hashing algorithm for storing passwords; however, it managed to be cracked within a few days with enough computing power to effectively break the algorithm. This is the case with many algorithms especially with the accessibility of powerful computers increasing as the prices decrease. This means that within a few decades or even years, who knows? Some of the algorithms that are considered to be secure today may end up being cracked. We would have to come up with new and improved algorithms to continue encryption and providing security to people who communicate or transmit information over the internet. Hackers are always trying to find ways to decrypt algorithms and in a few decades, they may be able to afford powerful computers such as quantum computers to help them out.
Us humans are easily susceptible to scams; some more than others. In current times, there are a lot of scamming methods that have a small chance of succeeding however, they manage to work. These include pretending to be a site/organisation as well as pop-up ads. These scams often trick people into revealing their passwords amongst other private information. Nowadays, more people are aware of these scams as they’ve been informed via social media or some other way. However, there are people who may not know about this as well and these people easily fall into the trap and make the scammers’ lives easier. For example, my parents could have fallen into this trap if not for me taking the phone and trolling the scammers. See, people who aren’t tech-savvy such as a lot of parents who may have come from places where there weren’t as much technology as there is nowadays can be victims to these types of scams. What’s the point of the encryption if someone else can easily fool people and access it?
