Q

Describe how equal representation works. Which colony and politician supported equal representation?

A

Equal representation means that no matter the population of one colony, both receive the same number of Representatives in the Legislature. Canada East, the French, wanted equal representation as they had a lower population than Canada West, and were afraid that Canada West would scratch away their culture if they had full control of the country. The politicians who supported equal representation were George-Étienne Cartier and Antoine-Aimé Dorion.

Describe how representation by population works. Which colony and politician supported representation by population?

A

Representation by population means that the colony with the higher population, gets more Representatives in the Legislature. Canada West, the British, wanted representation by population because they had a high population in comparison to Canada East, which meant they would have more control and win all arguments against Canada East. The politicians who supported equal representation were John A. McDonald and George Brown.
