A
- Cases which are first heard of at the level in the court hierarchy
- Referred to as courts of first instance or trial courts
E.g. Magistrates court, supreme, etc

Appellate Jurisdiction
A
- Authority to hear cases brought on appeal from a lower court in the hierarchy
- Decide whether the decisions in lower courts were made in accordance with the law
- QLD’s most important appellate court: Court of Appeal
