Original Jurisdiction

A
  • Cases which are first heard of at the level in the court hierarchy
  • Referred to as courts of first instance or trial courts
    E.g. Magistrates court, supreme, etc

Appellate Jurisdiction

A
  • Authority to hear cases brought on appeal from a lower court in the hierarchy
  • Decide whether the decisions in lower courts were made in accordance with the law
  • QLD’s most important appellate court: Court of Appeal
