Who was Jonathan Swift’s?
An Anglo-Irish satirist, poet, and essayist, known for Gulliver’s travels (he started out writing poems and essays). He came from a poor background and was ill. He was exiled from England due to his critical essays and returned to Ireland permanently. He was a clerk, a Doctor of Divinity, and has a PHD (which requires a long school process, a piece of research, and making an original piece of knowledge). He was a tory. He tried to help resolve the issues in Ireland.
What is a pamphlet?
A pamphlet is an unbound book. They would’ve been read by those educated and rich. First form of journalism- mostly used as religious or political propaganda.
What is satire?
The use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticise people’s or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
What is horation satire?
Satire where the speaker is ridiculing societal norms and behaviours- they are tolerant, witty, and amused.
What is juvenalian satire?
Formal satire which consists of harsh criticism and realism.
