Joint classifications Flashcards
List the 3 types of joints in the musculoskeletal system
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
This joint has the least amount of movement
Fibrous
This joint has some movement
Cartilaginous
This joint has the most amount of movement
Synovial
Covers bone ends where they articulate
Hyaline cartilage
Outer layer of DFCT
Inner layer of synovial membrane
Joint capsule
Which synovial joint structure
- secretes synovial fluid
- lubricates joints
- sends nutrients to avascular structures
Joint capsule
Explain how cartilage gets nutrients
Cartilage can not get nutrients from blood however, synovial fluid contains a lot of the same nutrients that blood does, so when you bend a joint the joint capsule pushes the synovial fluid into the cartilage to try and keep it healthy
Have them for support when want to restrict movement
Capsular ligaments
Restricts movement away from themselves
Ligaments
Inside capsule, holds bones together inside joint
Intrascapular ligaments
a ligament in the center of the knee that prevents the shin bone (tibia) from moving forward on the thigh bone (femur)
Anterior cruciate ligament
Stops femur from sliding backwards
Anterior cruciate ligament
Stops femur from sliding forwards
Posterior cruciate ligament
Not cartilaginous joints, different type of joint but made of the same material
Fibrocartilaginous pads
