Q

What does the vase depict?

A

Jocasta on the right with her right hand on her chin and left hand on her cheek- standard gesture in Greek art to indicate worry. Oedipus seems puzzled as he is stroking his beard while the messenger answer his questions. Can tell this represents a scene from Sophocles’ play because the columns represent the skene and the positioning of the characters i.e. the messenger uses theatrical gestures and faces the audience. Oedipus’ daughters appear in the front of the vase, although they don’t in this scene of the play
