What is the Tenahk and how many books does it have ?
The Hebrew Bible is called the Tenahk. It has 24 books and is the most important holy book for Jews.
What are the 3 parts of the tenakh ?
The Torah (laws), the nevi’im (prophets) and the ketuvim (writings).
What is the torah ?
The first five books written on parchment scrolls and is the most important part of the tenakh. It is handwritten by scribes and read with a yad.
What is the nevi’im ?
The next important part of the tenakh. The prophets did not always write the books themselves but they are named after them because they focus on their lives and teachings.
What is the ketuvim ?
A collection of proverbs, poetry and other writings for example psalms, proverbs, daniel and ruth.
What is the name of the major prophets ?
The name of them are Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
What is the name of the minor prophets ?
There are 12 of them including jonah, malachi, zechariah and zephaniah.
What is Talmud ?
The body of Jewish civil and ceremonial law and comprising the mishnah and the Gemara.
What does the Mishnah contain?
The Mishnah contains teachings on marriage, sacrifices and worship.
What does the Gemara contain?
The Gemara contains legal discussions on the Mishnah.
When is the ketuvim used and why?
These are used in sabbath worship since the psalms are sung on festival days.
What happens to the Torah when it is too old to be read?
When it is too old to be read it is buried.
