Dr. Jekyll describes in very positive terms how it feels to be free “of the bonds of obligation.” This is why Mr. Hyde is able to take over his body and mind.

- Dr Jekyll is respected due to his wealth, reputation as a charitable man and his discoveries in science.
- This shows that he is well-liked and respected in the society of Victorian London. As all of the men are judges of ‘good wine’, it indicates to the reader that they are all from respectable Victorian upper class society.

- Dr Jekyll becomes more erratic as the novel develops. This is because he is trying to conceal Mr Hyde from everyone.
- This highlights the change in Dr Jekyll’s behaviour, as before Dr Jekyll was happily talking to Mr Utterson. However, Stevenson describes a sudden change in Dr Jekyll’s behaviour.
Even though jekyll was well known for his scientific experiments. jekyll lost the respect of Dr lanyon because of his “unscientific balderdash”
jekyll is so desperate to separate his 2 sides that he willingly “risked death” by drinking the potion he created. Jekylls fanciful work is not seen as respectable because it crosses the boundary from the science of the material world into supernatural and mystical.
scientific discoveries in the Victorian times challenged religious beliefs.similarly jekyll uses science to challenge religious beliefs therefore this shows he is going against religious beliefs as well the society.
