Jejunum and Ileum Flashcards
What part of the small intestine are jejunm and ileum?
The jejunum and ileum are the distal two parts of the small intestine
Jejunum and ileum - Intra or retroperitoneal?
In contrast to the duodenum, they are intraperitoneal.
What attaches the jejunum and ileum to the posterior abdominal wall?
They are attached to the posterior abdominal wall by mesentery (a double layer of peritoneum).
The jejunum begins at…
…the duodenojejunal flexure.
The ileum ends at…
…the ileocaecal junction.
Demarcation of the jejunum and ileum
There is no clear external demarcation between the jejunum and ileum - although the two parts are macroscopically different.
What is the ileocecal valve
It is what is formed at the ileocoecal junction when the ileum invaginates into the cecum
What is the function of the ileocoecal valve?
Although it is not developed enough to control movement of material from the ileum to the cecum, it can prevent reflux of material back into the ileum.
Its function is to prevent the reflux on enteric fluid from the colon into the small intestine
Location of the jejunum
Upper left quadrant
Location of ileum
Lower left quadrant
Which has a thin intestinal wall - jejunum or ileum?
Ileum
Which has a longer vasa recta (straight arteries) - jejunum or ileum?

Which has more arcades (arterial loops) - Ileum or Jejunum ?
Ileum
What is the colour of the jejunum?
Red
What is the colour of the ileum?
