IUGR Flashcards
what is IUGR
birth weight
causes IUGR maternal
multiple pregnancy, malformation, infection, smoking, diabetes, nicr BP, decr Hb, pre eclampsia, heart/renal disease, asthma
what is spared in placental insufficiency
fetal head circumference
what are signs of placental insufficiency
asymmetric growth restriction (head spared), poor fetal movements, oligohydramnios
if growth restriction is suspected how is growth monitored
serial US scans- head and abdominal circumferences, umbilical cord doppler
what are growth restricted foetuses at higher risk of
hypoxia
what may be a problem after birth with IUGR baby
temp regulation due to lack of subcut insulation
what can happen to restricted baby after birth
jaundice as high Hb in utero, prone to hypoglycaemia, more susceptible to infection
how can you distinguish between prem baby and growth restricted1
breast bud tissue >34 weeks, ear cartilage at 35-39 weeks
effects IUGR on later life
diabetes type 2, hypertension, thyroid disease, CAD
specific problems of IUGR baby
perinatal hypoxia, resp distress, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, incr risk infection, polycythaemia, congenital malformation
