symptoms of IBS?
constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fluctuating bowel habit, worse after eating, improved by opening bowels, bloating
Advice for IBS?
regular small mals
reduced processed food,
limit caffeine and alcohol
adequate fluid intake
low FODMAP
probiotic supplements for 4 weeks
first line medication for IBS?
loperamide- diarrhoea
laxatives- constipation. avoid lactulose due to bloating
linaclotide- those not responding to first line laxatives
antispasmodics- buscopan
second line meds for IBS?
tricyclic antidepressant amitrptyline
3rd line meds for IBS?
SSRIs
diagnosis of IBS considered if patient has these 3 for 6 months?
abdominal pain
bloating
change in bowel habit
RISK FACTORS OF IBS?
gastroenteritis, stress
