- if a small holding was improved then the rent went up and people could be removed if they did not pay rent

they left because it was harder to make a living and poor economy

when they got there they opened fish and chips shops, ice cream shops and larger restaurants

they gained a reputation for being violent
they thought the irish took their jobs
catholic schools opened for irish immigrants
they joined scottish trade unions and faught in ww1 and joined political parties and formed football teams
why did the scots emigrate?
between the 1830s and 1930s scots left homeland and went to live in other countries
reasons for scottish emigration-push
-scottish land was difficult to grow on
-increasing population = increasing competition for jobs
-fishing,linden and kelp industries all failed which meant mass unemployment
/highland landowners kicked drifters off their land to make way for more profitable sheep or hunting and thus left drifters unemployed and homeless
