What did Cunningham state in 1986?
People tend to agree with other about whether someone is attractive or not.
What did Cunningham (1986) believe was the most attractive features on women? What does this link to?
Women who have a ‘baby face’ are perceived as attractive.
E.g. relatively large and widely separated eyes, a small nose, small chin, wide cheekbones, narrow cheeks.
This links to Bowlby’s ideas of social cues between primary care giver and infant, as the ‘baby face’ can be seen to bring about the characteristics for nurture and protection. In this case, men would find ‘baby faces’ more attractive due to innate biological factors.
What did Cunningham (1986) believe was the most attractive features on men?
Men that have small narrower eyes, big noses, big chins, thin cheekbones and wide cheeks are seen as attractive.
E.g. square jawlines, small eyes, and thin lips.
What is the halo effect?
The tendency for one outstanding trait to unduly influence an overall impression.
What did Brigham state in 1971?
Stated that an ethnic stereotype is a generalisation made about an ethnic group, concerning a trait attribution, which is considered to be unjustified by an observer.
Who proposed the idea of a matching hypothesis?
Elaine Wallster.
What is the matching hypothesis?
The notion that we are attracted to those who are about as physically attractive as we are.
This compromise is necessary because of the fear of reject.
Matching hypothesis doesn’t necessarily only involve physical attraction.
