Introduction Flashcards
What is the average length of a mentrual cycle?
28-35 days
What are the 2 types of cycles?
Ovarian
Uterine
What happens in the ovarian cycle:
day 1-13
day 14
day 15-28
Follicular (follicular genesis and maturation)
Ovulation (follicle then released)
Luteal phase (follicle accumulates fatty deposits + cholesterol which becomes corpus luteum)
What does the corpus luteum secrete a lot of?
Progesterone
What happens in the uterine cycle:
Day 1-5
Day 6-14
Day 15-28
Menses = low oestrogen and progesterone
Proliferative = High oestrogen (build up the endometrium)
Secretory (lots of mucus production) = high progesterone (maintains endometrium, habitable for implantation)
What happens on day 12-13 and why?
LH surge
36 hours pre ovulation drives up oestrogen
What is a marker test for ovulation?
when should it be done?
mid luteal progesterone
(cycle length - 7 days)
eg. measure on day 21 as 28-7=21
What does oestrogen do to the body?
female body composition
good for bone mineral density BMD
lots of spiral arterioles (more blood
blow to uterus)
builds up endometrium
What does progesterone do?
increase uterine mucus secretion
maintains endometrium
smooth muscle relaxation (myometrium)
What does LH act on to produce?
acts on THECA cells to produce oestrogen
What does FSH act on and key for?
acts on GRANULOSA cells, key for follicular genesis
When does the LH surge only happen?
When isolated high oestrogen
(oestrogen + progesterone high = -ve feedback)
