Intro to Statistical Inference Flashcards
what is the difference btw population and sample?
population implies all the subjects that can be studied while the sample will be a portion of the population
what is a statistical inference?
Generalizing from a sample to a population with calculated degree of certainty
what is the difference btw a parameter and a statistic?
Parameters are a characteristic of the population while statistic is calculated or inferred from the data in the sample.
what does p^(p con sombrerito) means? how do you calculate it?
denotes proportion of a particular characteristics of a sample
what is p mean? How it can be equated?
it denotes the population parameter
How would u calculate the population mean?
- find the sample mean ( a point estimate of the population mean.
- do a sample distribution
- standard SE error (SE) of the estimate
what is the standard SE error (SE) of the estimate?
It is a sd that tells us how far the typical estimate is away from the actual population mean.
ππΈπ₯ = π /βπ
there is no obvious way to stimate its sde from a single sample.
π= the population sd (unkown usually)
n=mean
what is sample distribution
the distribution of the point estimates based on samples of a fixed size from a certain population
what are point distributions?
a mean of some sample size
what is a confidence interval?
provide a plausible range of values for the population parameter. In other words, it provides a margin of error
how do u equte the CI for a 95% and a 99%
point estimate Β± 1.96 * SE
point estimate Β± 2.58 * SE
