Intro to routine radiology Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 2 effects of ionising radiation.

A

• Deterministic

  • Dose related effect of X-radiation (Eg Marie Curie)
  • Should NEVER occur in dentistry

• Stochastic / non deterministic (random)

  • May occur with ANY dose of X-radiation
  • May occur in dentistry
  • Universal precautions

Q

When are Bitewing radiograpghs taken?

A

Bitewing radiographs

  • Mainly taken to look for proximal caries
  • Safety net for occlusal caries
  • Show crown of tooth + coronal part of root
  • Also indicated when periodontal bone loss is less than 5mm

Q

how much over lap is acceptable?

A
  • As few contact points as possible
  • No more than half the thickness of the enamel

Q

What is cervical burnout?

A

An apparent radiolucency found just below the cementum-enamel junction (CEJ) on the root due to

  • anatomical variation (concave root formation or root bifurcation) or
  • a gap between the enamel and the bone covering the root.

It mimics root caries but don’t get caries on the root without loss of alveolar bone
