Intro to routine radiology Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 effects of ionising radiation.
A
• Deterministic
- Dose related effect of X-radiation (Eg Marie Curie)
- Should NEVER occur in dentistry
• Stochastic / non deterministic (random)
- May occur with ANY dose of X-radiation
- May occur in dentistry
- Universal precautions
2
Q
What intra oral dental views are available?
A
- Bitewing radiography
- Periapical radiography
- Occlusal radiography
3
Q
When are Bitewing radiograpghs taken?
A
Bitewing radiographs
- Mainly taken to look for proximal caries
- Safety net for occlusal caries
- Show crown of tooth + coronal part of root
- Also indicated when periodontal bone loss is less than 5mm
4
Q
study the problems in this radiograph?
A
5
Q
how much over lap is acceptable?
A
- As few contact points as possible
- No more than half the thickness of the enamel
- Enamel dentinal junction needs to be clear
6
Q
What is cervical burnout?
A
An apparent radiolucency found just below the cementum-enamel junction (CEJ) on the root due to
- anatomical variation (concave root formation or root bifurcation) or
- a gap between the enamel and the bone covering the root.
It mimics root caries but don’t get caries on the root without loss of alveolar bone
