Intro to Physiology Flashcards
What is physiology?
Study of the functional organization of the human body.
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of nearly constant conditions in the internal environment. Is made of adaptive responses. Physiology is dependent upon it!
What are three conditions of homeostasis?
optimum conc of ions, etc., optimal temp, optimal pressure for health of cells. Stress imbalances this.
What is most abundant cation in ECF?
sodium
What is the most abundant anion in ECF?
chlorine
What is the most abundant cation in ICF?
potassium
What is negative feedback?
A change in one parameter causes a response that results in a return of that parameter to normal; reverses direction of initial condition.
Basoreceptors are an example of what kind of feedback?
negative
What is positive feedback?
A change in some parameter causes a response that continues to change that parameter in the same direction as before. Input is intensified.
What is an example of a positive feedback mechanism?
Stretching of the cervix during delivery that increase uterine contractions.
What is gain? What is the formula for it?
The degree of effectiveness with which a control system maintains constant conditions. correction/error
Where are integral proteins?
are inserted into one side of the membrane or pass all the way through.
Where are peripheral proteins?
on the periphery of the membrane.
What is the function of cholesterol?
Maintains fluidity of the membrane at cold temperatures.
What does the plasma membrane do?
Selectively filters, defines ICF/ECF composition, exocytosis/endocytosis
