Intro To Para Flashcards
relationship between 2 unlike organisms
Symbiosis
the members of the symbiotic
relationship
Symbiont/Symbiote
area of biology concerned with the phenomenon of dependence of one living organism on another.
Parasitology
concerned primarily with the animal parasites of humans and their medical significance, as well as their importance in human communities.
Medical parasitology
both benefit (Ex: termites and flagellates)
Mutualism
one benefits, one is not
affected/unharmed (Ex: Entamoeba coli in the intestinal
lumen)
Commensalism
The organism is carried and nothing else happens
Phoresis/Phoretic
one benefits (parasite) and one is harmed (host)
Parasitism
- Harbors the mature form of the parasite
- Sexual reproduction and maturity takes
places in these hosts - Common FH are man
Definitive or Final Host
- Harbors immature/larval form of the parasite
- Asexual reproduction takes place
- Ex: Lower animals, vegetation, insects,
sometimes humans (in Plasmodium infections)
Intermediate host
- Responsible for transmission
Vectors
Vector that thereismorphologic
change or transformation of parasite before transmission to another host. Parasite is always inside
Biologic Vector
no morphologic change occurs. Parasite always outside
Mechanical/Phoretic Vector
Host that harbors a parasite that usually does not infect it
Accidental host
One in which the parasite does not develop further to later stages
Parasite remains alive and is able to infect another host
Paratenic Host
