26
Q

Lingual surfaces on the maxillary arch can also be referred to as?

A

Palatal surfaces

27
Q

Define Incisal/ Occlusal surfaces

A

-Incisal Surfaces- surface of incisors and canines that come in contact with those in the opposite jaws during the act of closure.
-Occlusal Surface- surface of premolars and molars that come in contact with those in the opposite jaws during the act of closure/

28
Q

Proximal Surfaces include?

A

-Mesial Surface- all surfaces towards the midline.
-Distal Surface- all surfaces away from the midline.

29
Q

The mesial surface and distal surface are collectively called?

A

Proximal Surface

30
Q

How many dentitions do we have in a lifetime?

A

2!
-Primary (Deciduous)- 20 teeth
-Permanent- 32 teeth

31
Q

How many dentition periods de we have, and what are they?

A
  • Primary dentition
-Mixed Dentition (both Primary & Permanent)
    -Permanent
32
Q

At what ages do the three dentition periods occur?

A

-Primary- 6 months - 6 years
-mixed- 6 years - 12 years
-permanent- 12 years and on

33
Q

Primary dentition begins with

A

the eruption of the first mandibular central incisor

34
Q

primary dentition ends with

A

the eruption of the first permanent tooth

35
Q

How many teeth are in each quadrant in primary dentition?

A

5

36
Q

When does calcification begin in primary teeth?

A

4-5 months in fetal life to 3-4 years after birth

37
Q

How do teeth normally erupt?

A

in pairs

38
Q

During Primary dentition, the jaws are

A

growing

39
Q

Mixed dentition begins with the eruption of ?

A

the permanent mandibular molar

40
Q

Mixed dentition ends with?

A

the shedding of the last primary tooth

41
Q

During Mided dentition, the jaws are ?

A

growing at their fastest rate

42
Q

Mixed dentition is also known as the “ “ stage?

A

the awkward stage

43
Q

When talking to parents about mixed dentition, you may point out some things, these include?

A

-tooth color changes
-halitosis
-size differences
- tooth brush selection

44
Q

permanent dentition begins with?

A

the shedding of the last primary tooth

45
Q

permanent dentition ends with

A

the eruption of the last permanent tooth

46
Q

How many teeth are in each arch of permanent dentition? each quadrant?

A

-16 per arch
-8 per quadrant

47
Q

Permanent teeth begin to calcify when?

A

after birth until about 25 years of age.

48
Q

Jaw growth during permanent dentition?

A

slows down and eventually stops

49
Q

Describe Incisors

A

-4 in each arch
-designed to cut “make an incision” (straight edge)
-tongue side shaped as shovel
-bite and cut

50
Q

What gives incisors a “shovel” appearance?

A

the lingual fossa

51
Q

Describe Canines

A

-Two in each arch
-designed for holding/grasping, piercing/tearing
-importance is seen in dogs, where we got the name canine
-longest teeth in the mouth (crown & root combined), best anchored
-cornerstone of the mouth
-major influence on one’s facial appearance

52
Q

Describe Premolars

A
  • four in each arch (4mx, 4md)
    -sometimes called bicuspids
    -usually have two cusps
    -have occlusal edges, not incisal
-help grind food and assist canines in tearing food
-found in only the permanent dentition
53
Q

Describe molars

A

-six in each arch
-largest and strongest teeth
-usually have 4 or more cusps on the occl surface, no incisal edges
-grind up food
-posteriorly located
-muscles of the jaw exert strong forces
-differ greatly from each other

54
Q

Enamel covers what part of the tooth?

A

the crown

55
Q

the anatomical crown ends where vs the clinical crown?

A

-anatomical crown ends at cej
-clinical crown ends at gumline

56
Q

Describe enamel

A

-hardest material in body
-thickest over tip of crown (for food crushing)
-thinner as it gets to cervical line

57
Q

the color of enamel varies with

A

thickness and mineralization
-thicker- whiter
-thinner- more yellow because dentin shows through

58
Q

what is enamel composed of?

A

-96% inorganic matter
-3% water
-1% organic matter

59
Q

Describe dentin

A

-largest portion of tooth
-softer than enamel but harder than cementum or bone
-covered by enamel on crown
-hard, dense, calcified tissue
yellow in color, elastic in nature

60
Q

what is dentin composed of?

A

-70% inorganic matter
-30% organic matter and water

61
Q

What are the types of dentin?

A

-Primary dentin- formed before apex of tooth is completed
-Secondary Dentin- formed after completion of the apex & will form for the life of the tooth
-Reparative dentin- laid down in response to caries or trauma

62
Q

Describe Cementum-

A

-covers the root
-there could be voids exposing dentin
-main function: anchorage- provides a medium for the attachment of the tooth to the alveolar bone.

63
Q

What is cementum composed of?

A

-63% inorganic matter
-23% organic matter (makes it able to regenerate)
-12% water
