intro to ANS Flashcards
autonomic nervous system (ANS) divisions
SNS, PSNS, ENS
ANS function
regulates organs or tissues involved in homeostasis
autonomic efferent components (2)
preganglionic neuron with cell body in CNS and postganglionic neuron with cell body in ganglion
sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function
fight or flight response; supplies skin, limb, blood vessels and muscles
SNS preganglionic neuron cell body
T1-L2
SNS postganglionic neuron cell body
sympathetic chain (sometimes outlying ganglia)
parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) function
rest and digest response; most active under quiet conditions; no supply to skin, limbs, blood vessels or muscles
PSNS neuron cell body
CN3,7,9,10 or S2-4
CN3 name and functions (3)
oculomotor - eye movements, pupil constriction, lens shape
CN7 name and functions (2)
facial - facial expression and taste
CN9 name and functions (2)
glossopharyngeal - blood pressure changes and swallowing
CNX name and functions (2)
vagus - thoracic and abdominal organ function
SNS neurotransmitters
acetylcholine and noradrenaline
SNS acetylcholine
acts on postganglionic neuron via nicotinic receptors
SNS noradrenaline
acts on target tissue via adrenoceptors
