intro and excavata group Flashcards
What kind of cell are protists
Eukaryotes and are very diverse
Clades of excavata
Diplomonads, euglenozoans, parabasilids
The protists- excavata
Members in this clade have an “excavated” feeding groove on the side of the cell body
Diplomonads
In excavata group
Has modified mitochondria called mitosomes
Lack e- transport (no O2) and live in anaerobic environments
Many are parasites
Multiple flagella and 2 nuclei
Parabasilids
Modified mitochondria called hydrogenosomes
Release hydrogen as byproduct
Many are parasites
euglenids (feeding, cell type, trait)
some autotrophic, some also heterotrophic (when no light), known as mixotrophy
unicellular freshwater organisms, no cell walls, membrane-bound nucleus
contractile vacuole (expands and contracts when pumping water), has 1-2 flagella that differ in structure from other organisms)
