Intro Flashcards
What is a evolutionary psychology?
The study of human behaviour and cognition from an evolutionary perspective
Why should we take the evolutionary approach?
- The continuity of science, and to help maintain consistency between different spheres of science
- to heat, humans connected to the dream of life.
- functionality is things in the body work together to have a purpose
What is evolution?
The change in frequency overtime, which includes changes to phenotypes due to changes in underlying genotypes
What are the 4 forces that shapes how genes work?
Mutation, genetic drift, migration, and natural selection (GMMN)
What is mutation?
A gene changes slightly between a parent and offspring
What is migration?
Different populations have different traits. Those populations migrate and mix introducing new traits to each other.
Mutation and migration causes variation
What is genetic drift?
Randomness something errors by chance, things happen and genes change between generations
What is natural selection?
The opposite of genetic drift, which is when useful. Gene changes cause more effective survival, so those characteristics are more likely to be passed on.
Filtering process
What are the free components to natural selection?
- Variation in the population for a trait.
- Trait must impact reproductive success.
- Must be heritable.
what is the goal of natural selection?
Hegan on treats so that they are adapted to the applicable environment and causes reproductive success in that environment going forward (reproduction of the fittest)
NOT SURVIVAL OF the FITTEST BUT survival au generations of the fifth traits
What is adaptation?
- Features of an organism shaped by natural selection to solve biological problems or enhance reproductive success in past generations
- These can be physical or behavioural and heritable
- Helped to solve problems such as
- looking for food, 2. competing with mates and 3. access to resources
What causes differences in reproductive success?
Variation
What is heritability?
The measure of how much of a characteristic is being passed on
Given an example of natural selection
Frogs, jumping into ponds of algae, makes them greener and less of a target from predators, and this trait has been filtered by natural selection
jumping is caused by natural selection, not the green Ness of the frog
What are examples of context, functional adaptations in humans?
The eyes the brain. They take a longer amount of time to work well, so it must be a significant advantage of keeping it working for our survival.
