Define intra-abdominal infection
presence of micro-organisms in normally-sterile sites within the abdominal cavity
What does the term ‘intra-abdominal infection’ exclude?
gastroenteritis
How can translocation across gut wall occur?
- perforation
- loss of integrity

How can translocation occur along a lumen?
- blockage
- iatrogenic
What causes loss of integrity of the bowel wall?
- ischaemia
- strangulation
What are the 3 main causes of bowel ischaemia?
- strangulation
- arterial occlusion
- post-op
Define cholecystitis
inflammation of the gallbladder wall
How would cholecystitis present?
fever, right upper quadrant pain, mild jaundice
What is cholangitis?
inflammation/infection of biliary tree (hepatic and common bile ducts)
What causes cholangitis?
mainly obstruction of common bile duct (can follow instrumentation)
What is an intra-peritoneal abcess?
localised area of peritonitis with build-up of pus
