-sensation
Order & Qualities for skin layer in Epidermis
Come Lets Get Sun Burned
-Stratum Corneum
-Stratum Lucidum
-Stratum Granulosum
-Stratum Spinosum
-Stratum Basale
How does melanin protect the skin?
Sunscreen scatters & absorbs the UV rays before penetrating through the epidermis.
How the Epidermis contributes to skin color & tanning?
Melanin granules are pushed out into the neighboring skin cells, the result in tanning.
Structure & Function for Dermis
-Structure & Function
Contains two layers
Papillary layer & Reticular Layer.
Three sensory detector
Meissner receptors, Pacinian Corpuscle, & Free Nerve endings.
Sebaceous glands
Location: Located all over the body except for palms of hands and soles of feet
Function: Produce oily substance called sebum
Sudoriferous glands
Location: On genitals and armpits.
Function: To produce sweat when temperatures rise and evaporation cooling reduces body temperature.
Hair follicles
Hair Color: Melanocytes in the follicle produce the pigment that gives it hair color
Hair Texture: The shape of the hair follicle
Goosebumps: When cold or frightened the arrector pili muscles contract to pull the hair up.
Three Nail Structures
Nail bed, Nail matrix, & Lunule
Hypodermis
Structure: Made of adipose tissue
Function: Source of energy
Three types of Cancer
Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, & Malignant Melanoma
Similarities and differences between degree burns.
First degree and second degree burn can place a cool wet compress on burnt area. For third degree burn you would need surgical procedure.
Rule of nines
9% for both anterior and posterior of the head and neck (4.5% per side)
18% for the anterior torso and 18% for the posterior of the torso. 9% for both the anterior and posterior of each arm (4.5% per side) 18% for both anterior and posterior of each leg (9% per side) 1% for genital region.
How does melanin protect the skin from UV rays?
Melanin functions as sunscreen by scatters and absorbs the UV rays.
