Integumentary System Flashcards
o Made from keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
o Superficial thinner portion of the skin
epidermis
o Deeper, thicker, and dense connective tissue portion
o Responsible for skin’s structural strength
dermis
epidermis
- Deepest layer consists of either columnar or cuboidal cells aligned in single row
- There are stem cells undergoing cell division to continually produce keratinocytes
Stratum basale
epidermis
- 8 to 10 layers of keratinocytes
- Provides strength and flexibility to the skin
stratum spinosum
epidermis
- 3 to 5 layers of flattened keratinocytes that are undergoing apoptosis
stratum granulosum
epidermis
- 4 to 6 layers of flattened clear, dead, keratinocytes that contain large amounts of keratin
- Found in areas of the body (thick skin) where exposure to friction is great
stratum lucidum
epidermis
- 25 to 30 layers of flattened dead cells from deeper strata
- Interior of cells contains mostly keratin that aids in its natural strength
stratum corneum
- Dense collagenous connective tissue (fibroblasts, adipocytes, and macrophages)
- Nerves, hair follicles, smooth muscles, glands, and lymphatic vessels
dermis
- Deep to the dermis, but not part of the skin
- Consists of areolar connective tissue and adipose tissue
subcutaneous tissue
accessory skin structures
hair
glands
nail
- Protects the skin and other structures of the body
- Produced in the hair bulb, which rests on the hair papilla
hair
two types of glands
sebaceous glands
sweat/sudoriferous glands
o lie in dermis and open into hair follicles or directly onto the skin
o secretes sebum
sebaceous glands
sweat glands found in palms, soles, forehead, and upper torso
eccrine glands
sweat glands found but limited to axillary and pubic regions
apcrine glands
