innate vs adaptive immune system Flashcards
cells of the innate immune system e.g.
mast, dendritic, neutrophil, macrophage
cells of the adaptive immune system e.g.
T cells and B ells
the adaptive immune system responds to
antigens on the surface of the pathogen
the innate immune system responses to
PAMPS on the outside of the pathogens
PAMPS
pathogen associated molecular pattern - shown by viruses and bacteria
examples of PAMPS
liposaccharides, lipoproteins, lipotechoich acid and peptidoglycan
MAMP
more general term: microorganism associated molecular pattern= can be pathogenic or non-pathogenic
innate immune cells have
PRRs which recognise pamps
PRRs
pattern recognition receptors
three types of PRRs
1) extracellular - in the walls of the innate cell
2) intracellular
3) secreted
extracellular PRRs
are found on the outside of immune cells–> can cause engulfment or signal to the nucleus to produce cytokines
example of extracellular PRRS
Toll-like receptor
intracellular PRRs
found on the inside of immune cells and response to pathogens that have gained access to the cell. triggers the nucleus to produce cytokines
example of an intracellular PRR
NOD receptor
secreted PRRS
secreted by immune and liver cells. Complementary receptors which induce complement cascadr
