Inferential stats Flashcards
When is the sign test used?
When looking for a difference between conditions.
(eg: an experiment, not a correlation)
Which design of study is a sign test used in?
In a repeated measured design.
What kind of data is used in sign tests?
Nominal data (frequency data that is in categories).
How do you complete a sign test?
1 - Record the data
2- Convert to nominal data by stating the sign (- or +)
3 - Add up how many + you have and how many - you have. Take the lower number
The smaller number is your calculated value (aka observed value) and is quoted as being s=
Can you be 100% certain your results weren’t a change finding?
No
What is the traditional accepted level of significance/probability in psychology?
P <0.05
or
probability that our results are due to to chance is less than or equal to 5%
How do you find out if your test results are significant?
By calculating (using stats) the probability that the results are due to chance.
How do you find the critical value?
Using a critical value table.
What is the statement of significance?
The calculated value (state no.) is greater/less/equal to the critical value (state no.), at 5% probabilities, for a one/two tailed hypothesis. Therefore the result are (not) significant and i can accept/reject my null hypothesis.
