importance of respiration Flashcards
1
Q
why do living organisms respire?
A
they need energy to move, grow and carry out living processes (eg. active transport, muscular contractions)
2
Q
how do photosynthetic organisms respire?
A
they absorb and convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy. this chemical energy is used to split water into h+ ions and oxygen. h+ ions then reduce carbon dioxide into glucose. this is photosynthesis. this glucose that is formed during photosynthesis needs to be oxidised to produce ATP that can be used by the organism
